Victor LeBron Born: July 21, 1984, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Jockey Victor Lebron got his first meet at Oaklawn off to a fast start by winning four races in the first five days of racing, including the $60,000 American Beauty Stakes with Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s Cheery.
The native of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, rode one race in his home country before moving to the United States in 2005. He earned his first career victory in October of that year aboard Cat’s Sign at Thistledown.
Since coming to the U.S., Lebron has ridden primarily in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. He clinched his first riding title at the 2007 Indiana Downs meet and his second at Turfway Park, winning 79 races during the 2008 Winter/Spring Meet.
On August 16, 2008, in his first mount in a graded stakes, he guided 21-1 longshot Swift Temper to a four and a half-length victory in the $150,000 Gr. III Gardenia Stakes at Ellis Park. The Gardenia was one of five wins on the card for Lebron that day.
He grew up riding pleasure horses on his father's farm in St. Croix. St. Croix has a small racetrack, the Randal "Doc" James, but it wasn't until Lebron saw the Kentucky Derby on television that he thought of becoming a jockey. "I was about eight or nine years old," he said. "I saw the action, the purse, the riding—it became one of my dreams." At 14, Lebron started galloping horses at the St. Croix track.
